Yesterday there were two separate posts on VOIP apps for the Iphone/Itouch, the first from TechCrunch about fring (iphone only) and the second from LifeHacker on setting up SIP-Voip(Iphone and Itouch). The app’s look pretty cool but note that they are still in beta and could possibly mess up your phone. The one downside is your Iphone/Itouch needs to be jail-broken in order to use these app’s.
The TechCrunch article doesn’t cover setting fring up, but they do have links to the fring blog where you can find out how to set it up. Fring supports Skype, MSN Messenger, Google Talk, ICQ, SIP, Twitter, Yahoo and AIM services. That’s a lot of services from one app, personally the skype part would be nice as I have soe friend’s who use Skype. It looks promising for being beta, too bad apple more than likely won’t allow it in the app store.
The LifeHacker article show’s how to set up SIP-Voip on your Itouch, I think the install would be the same for the Iphone. The Itouch doesn’t have a mic so you would need a mic to make calls. With SIP-Voip you need to have a SIP server to connect to, don’t worry LifeHacker covers how to find one and how to get a phone #.
If you have a jail-broken Iphone or Itouch and you want to either make VOIP calls or just want experiment with VOIP check out both of the articles.
Been pretty busy this week so I wrote this post really fast. Sorry if it sounded “rushed.”
