Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron Released

Ubuntu Boot ScreenToday Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron was released.  This release is a major upgrade for the entire Ubuntu team.  Shortly after it was released I downloaded the iso and installed it inside Virtual Box.  It installed pretty quickly and have had no major issues after installing it, I did have to increase the video ram inside Virtual Box so the resolution would go higher than 800×600.

Ubuntu InstallThe setup process is very easy and straight forward, I am not sure how easy/hard it is to set up FakeRAID (have to use that due to NVRAID).  In the previous versions I would have to set up some of the raid stuff by hand which is one of the reasons I have used Fedora.  Update: my friend went to install Ubuntu and it doesnt detect NVRAID by default, kinda sucks but fedora 9 is out in a few weeks so looks like I will be using that distro.

Ubuntu DesktopUbuntu’s interface is awesome.  The look made me feel right at home and getting to know where everything is was easy.  I can totally see why this is a great alternative to Windows.  I would like to mention that the wallpaper is really cool, I like it.

My thoughts on this latest release are positive so far.  If I had someone who never used linux before try this they would pick it up really quickly.  The one downside for me is the lack of automated FakeRAID setup.  If you have been looking into linux or Ubuntu give this a try and since its a LTS release you are getting 3 years of security and other fixes.

It really sucks that fakeRAID has not yet been implemented into the desktop distro. I was really looking forward to this version, but sadly installing Ubuntu in a software RAID setup is not exactly “for human beings”.
