Facebook’s New Profile Redesign

Facebook invited some bloggers to their HQ to show off their latest profile redesign.  The guys over at TechCrunch covered it, check out the article its pretty interesting.  I just wanted to give my thoughts on some of the images that were released.

I’ll admit my facebook profile is cluttered and I don’t use third party applications, besides ones I make.  The clutter comes from the current profile not being so wide, there’s alot of unused space on the sides for me.  Currently all the information is on the profile page, which is nice when you dont feel like clicking through a bunch of stuff.  The new profile design seperates parts of the profile into tabs, applications have their own tab now.  This is where I disagree with the new design.  Making me click through tabs to see different information is pretty lame and people will have to “search” for the information they want.

It seems that with this new profile redesign people will not be able to put applications on the first page as it is just the “feed.”  That is just what it looks like from the screen shots.  If this is how it is going to be it kind of sucks, the static “main page” type applications are going to slowly die because they won’t be that useful.  Ok well the applicaton I am working on is ment to go on the main page or the new “info” page so we’ll have to see if you can bring applications to other pages.  Personally the applications tab is just going to be games people have added.  It will seem like a carnival that makes no sense,  applications that are useful mixed with ones that are just for fun is a little bit weird.  Although people can apparently make custom application tabs to show off applications they like.  Hopefully there is a limit to how many tabs can be made, I know some people who would have all of their 100+ applications (they have 138 on their profile to be exact) as tabs.

We’ll have to see how Facebook uses the feedback they get when developers are allowed to test their applications in the new profile design.
